John J. Benoit Detention Center
Project Summary
Riverside County EDA (2015-2021)
The John J. Benoit Detention Center sits on the southwest corner of Highway 111 and Oasis Street in Indio, California. The first phase
of the project included all site work, construction of a 2-story support building with basement and a four-level housing building consisting
of two adjacent housing units. The second phase consisted of equipment salvaging and demolition of the existing jail. Following the jail
demolition, the site was developed to include public parking, secure vehicle intake sally-port, entry canopy, hardscape, landscape, and
completion of the exterior of the housing building.
IFE Role
As the project geotechnical engineer of record, IFE documented
geotechnical conditions exposed during demolition and developed
alternative design recommendations as necessary. Our services
included; observation and materials testing during site earthwork, utility
trench backfill, and site paving, shoring and tie-back inspection, logging
and ICC-concrete inspection during construction of more than 300 CIDH
piles, concrete batch plant inspection, laboratory of testing for soil,
concrete, steel, masonry and asphalt concrete, ICC-reinforced concrete
inspection and test cylinder fabrication, ICC-reinforced masonry
inspection, asphalt concrete testing, smoke control special inspection,
environmental remediation consultation.
